The SCI was a hands-on sponsor of yesterday’s Tonbridge Half Marathon. The professional coaching team provided a free stretching and mobility facility for runners to use both before and after the race, which proved incredibly popular and even saw queues forming as athletes gathered in the sun to loosen off tired muscles.
Local MP Tom Tungendhat was a grateful customer, Tweeting “Thank you @SouthEastSCI for the stretch! I feel much better!!!” and sharing a photograph of himself with SCI Coach Craig Libby. The SCI coaches supervised stretching and aided runners with the use of foam rollers and massage balls, helping to promote a fast recovery time and lessen DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) for athletes.
Up to 1500 runners took on the 2015 event, which this year celebrated its fifth annual race. The race is a firm favourite on the running calendar, and takes runners through picturesque Leigh village, where children turned out to cheer runners on and offer water and fruit refreshments.
Sean Downs of the Rotary Club of Tonbridge, who co-organise the Tonbridge Half Marathon with Tonbridge Lions, said: “Having one of Kent’s leading health and fitness business as a sponsor brought huge value to our 2015 event. The runners were delighted to be welcomed and looked after by such a passionate and knowledgeable team, and to see so many people enjoying a post-race experience was fantastic.”
Director and Head Coach Alex Shoebridge said: “The buzz at the Athletes’ Village this year was amazing, and is a tribute to runners, supporters and the organisers. We are so proud to have been involved, and to be able to personally congratulate and chat to so many runners as they recovered after the race was a real privilege. Congratulations to all who took on such a challenging course!”
